Service and autostart
Configure how the server starts and what keeps it running.
Service installation
After initialization, install a per-user service:
subshell-server service install
subshell-server service statusLinux uses systemd user services; macOS uses launchd agents. Installation starts the server. --no-autostart starts it now without enabling login startup.
Use service start, service stop, or service restart to operate an installed service. Those commands do not install a missing definition.
Start at login
subshell-server service enable
subshell-server service disableThese change future login behavior without stopping the process currently running.
On Linux, user-service enablement is separate from lingering. A host administrator can enable lingering when the server must continue after logout:
loginctl enable-linger "$USER"Desktop supervision
Subshell Server can supervise the process directly or use an installed service. An app-supervised process stops with the app; a service is independent of the desktop window.
In the server dashboard's sidebar, open Server Settings → Service to inspect the running process. This page shows process state separately from supervision and persistence. Changing supervision mode inside the desktop app uses its native assistant because the transition can stop the server.
Headless recovery
A stopped server cannot serve its own management page. Start it from the host CLI or desktop assistant.
