Reset and uninstall

Reset the server's local state or uninstall its executable.

Before you start

Create a backup and review the actual deletion paths with subshell-server status --json. These operations run from the host CLI or desktop assistant, not a page served by the server.

Permanent deletion

Reset stops local server work and removes the instance's data and settings. Without a separate backup, accounts, keys, and captured history cannot be recovered.

Reset

subshell-server reset

The CLI requires the machine's name as confirmation. It removes the service definition and configured data while retaining the installed binary. Initialize again when you want a fresh instance.

A headless invocation uses --confirm <machine-name>. --yes is refused and cannot replace the name. After consent, the CLI continues clearing state even if individual cleanup steps fail; inspect the resulting exit status and reported errors.

Uninstall

subshell-server uninstall

Uninstall stops the server, removes its service and installed binary, and asks separately whether to remove data. Keeping data is the default. A headless uninstall uses --reset-data only when you intend to delete it too.

Resetting the server does not erase project directories, separately enrolled node homes, or remote machines. Those machines have their own removal procedures.

Next steps

Read Unenroll a node for node removal and Backups and restoration for recovery.
