Files and paths
Locate the files that define your installation's state.
Ask the installed binary
subshell-server status --json
subshell status --jsonThese report the installation's resolved paths. Use them before backup, relocation, or removal, especially when defaults were overridden.
Server files
| File or directory | Contents |
|---|---|
~/.config/subshell-server/config.env | Default persistent server configuration. |
| Configured SQLite database | Accounts, sessions, presets, prompts, sharing, and instance records. |
Server data plugins/ | Instance-wide installed plugin store. |
Server data backups/ | Consistent database snapshots. |
Server data node-artifacts/ | Cached or staged node release binaries. |
| Pane log storage | Captured terminal transcripts. |
| MCP identity storage | Recipient keypairs and peer pins. |
Database path, data directory, and log directory can differ. The database's raw default is relative to the boot working directory; initialized production configuration uses its selected persistent location.
Where to change environment values
For persistent server address settings, open Server Settings → Networking in the dashboard sidebar and use the Addresses card, or run subshell-server configure on the server host. When editing a file directly, use the configuration path reported by subshell-server status --json; the default is ~/.config/subshell-server/config.env. SUBSHELL_SERVER_CONFIG_DIR can move that file.
Process environment values override saved configuration. For a foreground process, set variables in the shell that starts the binary. For a background service, configure the environment supplied by its service manager and restart it. Changing an interactive shell does not change an already-running service's environment. See Service and autostart and Node services.
Agent binary overrides belong to the machine and execution account running the agent. A node's enrollment configuration stores its server identity and credential; do not treat it as the server's config.env. Environment values saved in a preset are edited in the preset form.
For Docker, edit the container command or Compose environment and recreate the container. Keep configuration files and instance data in the persistent volume.
Node files
The node reports its configuration file, daemon lock, data directory, binary, and agent log. Configuration contains the node credential and trusted control-plane key.
unenroll removes configuration and lock but retains other data. Reset has a broader deletion plan. Do not treat every path in status output as a deletion target.
Project and agent storage
Uploads live under <workingDir>/.subshell/uploads/ and are not automatically swept. Agent provider credentials and conversation transcripts belong to the CLI's home or project state, not solely to the Subshell database.
