Install on Linux
Install the standalone Subshell server and complete its initialization.
Before you start
Use an x86-64 or arm64 Linux machine with curl and a supported user-service environment. Run the installer as the account that will run the server and its local agents.
Install the server
curl -fsSL https://subshell.sh/install-server.sh | bashThe installer selects a published release for your platform, checks its SHA-256 digest, installs subshell-server under ~/.local/bin, and runs initialization. The checksum detects corrupted downloads; it comes from the same release host as the binary.
- Follow the tmux preflight instructions.
- Review the configured port, bind address, and browser address.
- Choose whether to run a background service and start at login.
- Open the setup address printed by initialization.
The background option installs a systemd user service. If you skip it, start the server in your terminal:
subshell-serverCheck the resolved installation with:
subshell-server status
subshell-server service statusNotes
init --yes accepts the tmux installation, PATH changes, and background service as well as configuration defaults. Use init --no-service when you want to manage the process yourself.
On Linux, a user service may need lingering to continue after logout. Read Service and autostart.
