Install the server manually
Install a selected Subshell server release without using the installation script.
Before you start
Choose a published cli-server release and an asset matching your operating system and architecture. Install tmux and make a writable directory available to the OS account that will run the server.
Download and verify
- Open Subshell downloads and select the server option. Follow its release link to find CLI assets; choose the required
cli-server-vrelease when staging a specific version. - Download its
subshell-server-cli-<target>binary and matching.sha256file. - Compute the binary's SHA-256 digest and compare it with the published value. Do not execute a file that fails the comparison.
- Rename the binary to
subshell-serverand place it in a directory on your PATH.
For a downloaded binary renamed in the current directory:
chmod 755 subshell-server
./subshell-server version
./subshell-server initInitialization writes configuration and prepares the authentication secret. Accept the service offer if this machine should run unattended.
Start and inspect
If initialization did not install a service, run subshell-server in the foreground. Use subshell-server status to see configuration paths, tmux availability, and process/service diagnostics.
Do not use a production placeholder authentication secret. Initialization creates a unique secret; preserve it when moving the instance.
Next steps
Complete the server's setup experience, then review Configuration.
